Collections and views
A collection holds records that share the same fields: your bookshelf, your wine list, this year's receipts.
Adding more
Tap the + in the corner of a collection to add more photos to it. New photos use this collection's fields - no setup this time. You go straight from checking the outlines to reviewing the records.
Choosing a view
The View menu offers every way this collection can be shown. Catchall only offers views that have something to show, and opens the one that fits best.
| View | Shows | Offered when |
|---|---|---|
| Gallery | A grid of picture cards | Records have photos |
| Table | Rows and columns | The collection has at least three fields worth a column. It's the default for records that came off a grid or a list. |
| Map | A pin for each record | Records know where their photo was taken |
| Calendar | An agenda by date | Enough records have a date that can be placed on a calendar. It's the default when a field has the Event Date role. |
| Records | One record at a time, to swipe through | Always |
If a collection has dates or places and you haven't looked at it that way yet, Catchall may suggest it.
Sorting and grouping
Above the gallery are two controls.
Sort orders the records by:
- Date Added
- Distance - nearest to you first, for records that know where they were taken
- Any field, by name - alphabetically, by number or by date, as suits the field
Group splits the gallery into sections:
- Source Photo - records that came from the same photo, together
- A category-like field - one section per value
- A number field - tiers, such as
$to$$$$for a price - A date field - one section per period, such as a month
If an option can't be used for this collection, it's greyed out with the reason - for instance, a field whose values barely repeat, or that only a few records have filled in.
In the Table view, tap a column header to sort by that column.
Looking at a record
Tap a record to open it. Swipe sideways to move to the next one, in the order the view was showing them. Tap the photo to see it full screen. A record with a location shows it on a map, with Open in Maps and Copy Coordinates.
Tappable fields do what they say: a place opens Maps, a link opens the page, an email address starts a message and a phone number starts a call.
Editing a collection
Open the collection's More menu (⋯) and choose Edit Collection… to change its:
- Name
- Color
- Fields - rename, add, remove, change roles, or add instructions, just as when you created it
A field you add later is filled in for new records from then on. Records already saved keep the values they have, so you can fill the new field in by hand. Deleting a field removes its value from every record that has one - Catchall tells you how many first. A field's kind can't be changed once records hold values for it.
Deleting a collection
More → Delete Collection… deletes the collection and every record in it. This can't be undone. If you might want it back, export your data first.
